Kriegsmarine soldiers were often ordered to serve on land as well as at sea. Ship and submarine crews were often deployed on land in areas near the sea. Especially recognisable by their sailor or grey-blue submarine uniforms.

They formed at least three divisions of their own. In addition to officers from the Wehrmacht, they were often led on land by their own commanders, such as corvette captains or submarine commanders.
