Korean War: North Korean KPA Weapons Teams

The Korean People's Army (KPA) was a formidable military force during the turbulent period of the Korean War. It comprised an impressive 150,000 to 200,000 men and was organised into 10 infantry divisions, 1 armoured division, and 1 air force division. Even before the outbreak of the war, conscription had been introduced in North Korea, and many young men were either encouraged or forced by their own families to enlist due to the promise of financial reward.

When the Korean War erupted in 1950, the KPA was prepared and well-equipped for the impending conflict. They possessed the advantage of superior training and more favourable equipment, setting them apart from their adversaries. Moreover, previous experiences in guerrilla warfare in South Korea had left the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) with little time to re-establish a solid military presence. Consequently, the KPA's initial attacks on June 25, 1950, proved highly effective.

The KPA foot soldier was renowned for his resilience, capable of enduring not only the challenges posed by the enemy but also the harsh Korean climate and the demands of his own superiors. Modelled after the mechanised Soviet army, armed with Stalin-supplied weapons, and bolstered by seasoned veterans discharged from China, KPA troops were a force to be reckoned with. They were larger and more formidable than the United Nations had initially anticipated, setting the stage for a protracted and arduous conflict.
