Korean War Ace Pilot: Zhao Baotong

Zhao Baotong is credited as being the first Chinese jet pilot to achieve ace status during the Korean War. Zhao was deputy commander of the 3rd Air Group of the 7th PLAAF Regiment when China intervened in the Korean conflict.

His first engagement with USAF F-84 Thunderjets in November 1951 showed his willingness to engage a greater number of enemy aircraft and risk G-induced blackout to get favourable shots. Over the next three months, he shot down seven enemy aircraft and damaged two. Chairman Mao Zedong himself lauded the pilot with the award 'Combat Hero - First Class' and declared Zhao Baotong was worthy of the title ‘King of Air Combat’.
