Blood Red Skies: Kawanishi N1K2 Shiden-kai 'George' Squadron

The Kawanishi N1K-2 'Shiden Kai' ("Violet Lightning") was a land-based fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force (IJNAF). Known to the Allies as "George", the N1K-2 was considered one of the best land-based fighters of the Japanese. Initial shortcomings were addressed in the N1K2-J Kai ("modified") version. However, as an effective bomber interceptor, it had a hard time.

The Shiden-Kai not only offered pilots high speed but also a robust and agile aircraft with four powerful 20mm cannons in the wings. The result was an aircraft that could more than hold its own against the latest Allied fighters such as the F6F Hellcat, the F4U Corsair, and the P-51 Mustang.

The IJN supplied them in limited numbers and distributed them to elite units such as the 343rd Kokutai Naval Fighter Group (formed on December 25, 1944, and commanded by Minoru Genda). The new 343rd Kokutai featured Japan's best fighter pilots such as Muto and Genda.
