John III Sobieski, King of Poland & Grand Duke of Lithuania

King John III Sobieski is probably the most famous king in Polish history. He earned his reputation at the Battle of Vienna, where he stormed in with his hussars and saved the city. His victory at Vienna was the culmination of a long career. As a nobleman, commander, and king, his life was marked by the numerous conflicts that plagued the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. And there were many conflicts: John III fought against Cossack rebellions, Crimean Tatars, the Ottoman Empire, the Kingdom of Sweden, and the Russian Tsar, as well as against rebels throughout the Commonwealth. He was an experienced commander long before his fateful attack on Vienna.
