Japanese Army Weapons Teams

Infantry weapon teams are a key component of any Bolt Action army, providing great tactical flexibility to your force. Sniper teams, anti-tank teams and flamethrower teams are among the most prevalent weapon types, presenting numerous challenges for your opponent to overcome.

The lack of anti-tank guns capable of engaging heavier tanks such as the Sherman led Japanese infantry to devise desperate anti-tank weapons. These often required soldiers to take extreme risks or even sacrifice their lives. The most famous of these weapons was the Lunge Mine, a hollow charge attached to a bamboo pole. In other instances, soldiers would wait in camouflaged pits with an artillery shell to thrust into the bottom of a passing tank or strap multiple magnetic mines or satchel charges to themselves, throwing themselves onto the enemy vehicle.

Pioneer units formed part of every IJA division. They carried explosives for demolition work and assaults on enemy fortifications and were also equipped for mine clearing. Some carried the Type 100 flamethrower, which saw action in Indonesia and the Philippines during the early years of World War II.

The jungles of Southeast Asia provided ample opportunity for snipers to excel, and Japanese snipers were well-served with the scoped Type 97 sniper rifle. The rifle was particularly suited for concealed sniping, as the small calibre round and long barrel produced little muzzle flash or smoke, helping to keep the shooter hidden from the enemy.
