Italian Army Guastatori Destruction Group

At the beginning of the war, the Italian Army did not have assault troops capable of storming enemy fortifications. The performance of pioneer units in the German Blitzkrieg showed the Italians the need for such units, leading to the creation of the Guastatori del Genio, who began training units in late 1940.

In early 1941, these specialized engineers fought in North Africa, and by mid-1942, they were also deployed on the Eastern Front. During the Sicily campaign, the 11th Guastatori Battalion was assigned to the "Livorno" Division and fought alongside it throughout the campaign.
