Italian Ace Pilot: Leonardo Ferrulli

Leonardo Ferrulli was one of the Regia Aeronautica's most successful aces. He flew all types of biplanes, from the CR.42 to the C.200 and C.202 monoplanes with great success. He volunteered for the Spanish Civil War in 1937, claiming his first victory there, shooting down a Republican bomber.

During the Second World War, he fought in North Africa, Yugoslavia, and in the bitter air battles over Malta, where he took a heavy toll on Allied fighters and bombers. Over Sicily on July 5th, 1943, intercepting an attack, he shot down a B-17 Flying Fortress and a P-38 Lightning in quick succession (his 21st and 22nd victories) before being killed shortly after by an escorting Spitfire.
