The first Hungarian Parachute Battalion was established in 1940, using transports from the national airline Mágyar Légiforgalmi R.t. In 1941, they saw their first combat experience against Yugoslavia, where, after initial mishaps, they captured the Franz Josef Canal. The paratroopers did not see further combat until December 19, 1944, when, as part of the elite Szent László Division, they were deployed as emergency troops to plug gaps in Budapest's defensive rings. The regiment suffered heavy losses but was praised in Wehrmacht dispatches for its aggressive fighting spirit against overwhelming Soviet attacks.

Even after the fall of Budapest, the paratroopers, then incorporated into the elite Szent László Division, fought against the Soviets all the way to Austria as they were pushed back, finally surrendering to the Americans.
