Hajduk Regiment

The Polish army was heavily influenced by Hungary due to the close ties between the two nations. In addition to the legendary winged hussars, some of the Polish infantry also came from Hungary and the Balkans. These infantrymen were known as Hajduks, sharing a name with the irregular fighters in Hungary. However, unlike their Hungarian counterparts, the Polish Hajduks formed the core of the Polish infantry.

The role of the Hajduks in the Polish army was to support the cavalry by providing fire support while the mounted troops prepared to charge. They were versatile soldiers, equipped with arquebuses and short swords for close combat should the enemy manage to get close. This combination made them particularly effective infantry in the late 1500s and early 1600s. However, the development of muskets rendered arquebus-armed Hajduks obsolete, and by the end of the 17th century, they had been replaced by Western-style musket troops.
