When the US Navy and Marine Corps entered World War II, they had only one effective fighter aircraft at their disposal: the F4F Wildcat. Fortunately, the Wildcat proved more than up to the task of holding the line.

While the Wildcat was outmanoeuvred and outclimbed by the lighter Japanese Zero, the Wildcat was significantly more robust and more heavily armed than its adversary. Even as larger, more modern fighters took over the interceptor role, the useful little Wildcat remained in production until the end of the war.
