Lieutenant Colonel Walter Borchers was credited with 59 aerial victories, including 43 night victories, 10 as a destroyer pilot, and 6 four-engined bombers by day, achieved in around 300 combat missions.
On July 27, 1944, he was awarded the "Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross", by which time he had achieved a total of 45 aerial victories.
Borchers was shot down and killed in action on the night of March 6, 1945.
