German scientists had been working on rocket launchers since World War I. When the German Army crossed the Russian border in 1942, they had a secret weapon code-named Nebelwerfer. This was a multi-barreled rocket launcher whose projectiles flew thousands of meters to shell enemy positions...

With a terrifying "flaming flash" and a dreadful howl, this weapon caused destruction and terror. It laid down a barrage over an area less precisely than most artillery, but had a psychological effect that could undermine the will of the defenders.
