German Heer 8.8cm Flak 37 (Winter)

The infamous "Eighty-Eight" or "88" as it was dubbed by Allied troops, was originally designed as an anti-aircraft weapon, possessing a high muzzle velocity which allowed it to reach the higher ranges of bombers. This characteristic also made it an exceptionally deadly anti-tank weapon, as many Allied tank crews found to their sorrow. As such, the 88 was also deployed as a conventional artillery piece. As one infantryman remarked, the 88 was "good against everything"...

The 88 saw service on all fronts the Germans fought on during World War II. The 88 was capable of penetrating up to 108mm of armour plate at ranges of up to 1,100 metres. Its fearsome reputation grew immensely during its deployment in the Western Desert, where it was one of the few weapons capable of taking on British Matilda II infantry tanks. A similar scenario played out on the Eastern Front, as the 88 was among the few weapons that could take on Soviet T-34 and KV tanks.
