Germany’s aggressive campaigns of conquest ensured that their armies were fighting in many countries far from the homeland and in wildly contrasting terrain and weather conditions. German soldiers were well-equipped for their operations in Europe and later North Africa but found themselves ill-prepared for the desolate, icy and unforgiving Eastern Front. When the Russian armies failed to collapse the Wehrmacht found themselves bogged down on the Russian plains, literally freezing to death in many cases.

Gradually, German industry caught up to address the shortfalls in winter clothing and the troops and their families even manufactured suitable winter gear to keep the general frost at bay. The clever use of white or reversible camouflage clothing and snow hoods helped keep the cold out and hide the troops in harsh terrain. Mittens and thick felt boots, blankets and scarves meant the Landser could not only survive, but fight and win, the bitter winters of the 1940s.

This boxed set contains a squad of German infantry in a wide variety of winter clothing, very much representing the rag-tag look of soldiers on any winter front from the Soviet Union to the Ardennes. These figures are ideal for use as either Heer or Waffen-SS.
