French Army Infantry

The French Army started WWII as the strongest army in the world. Its infantry divisions were well-equipped, possessed excellent tanks and artillery, were numerous, and confident of turning back the hated Boche as they had done twenty-two years earlier. However, this was not the same war and all too often the French infantryman found himself facing German panzer units that had outmanoeuvred them as the Blitzkrieg rolled across Europe.

It was to the honour of France and her regiments that so many Frenchmen dug in and fought against a more tactically advanced foe. Resolutely the French fought hard in battles such as Hannut, Arras, Boulogne and Saumur against the sweeping offensives of the German invaders, giving their best.

Many brave Frenchmen subsequently fought the Allies in Vichy France, causing both admiration and disgust in equal measure, whilst others returned with the Allied invasion of France in 1944 to reclaim their homeland...
