Adolf Hitler, having suffered heavy losses during the attack on Crete during Operation Mercury, forbade the German airborne troops from carrying out any further large-scale airborne drops.

The Fallschirmjäger instead operated as elite infantry, serving in every theatre in which Germany fought. Supported by two high-rate-of-fire weapons – the deadly MG42 general-purpose machine gun and the Granatwerfer 34 8cm medium mortar – they were respected by the Allies for their fighting prowess and honourable actions.
