The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a rugged US Navy fighter aircraft. It proved to be highly capable in combat, accounting for 75% of the air victories achieved by the US Navy in the Pacific. This astonishing figure amounts to 5156 Japanese aircraft destroyed, with a loss of only 270 F6F Hellcats in aerial combat.

The first production model entered service in August 1943 and was very popular with pilots due to its high performance, firepower, and reasonable maneuverability. Of 4402 aircraft produced, 252 were provided under Lend-Lease for use by the Fleet Air Arm in the United Kingdom (known as Hellcat Mk1).
