Following Napoleon's invasion of Paris and the commencement of the Hundred Days campaign, King Wilhelm II of Prussia recalled Blücher from his retirement in Silesia and tasked him with confronting the resurgent Frenchman. Given command of the Army of the Lower Rhine, he rapidly marched west to link up with the Anglo-Dutch allies, hoping to consolidate their forces.

Unfortunately, the Prussian army was hastily assembled and fielded with poor equipment and training. Over a third of the troops consisted of Landwehr soldiers, some of whom marched barefoot into war. At the Battle of Ligny, the Prussian army directly confronted Napoleon and was crushingly defeated, with Blücher himself trapped for hours under his dead horse, injured. The Battle of Waterloo offered a chance for redemption.
