The most basic building block of infantry was the infantry regiment (referred to as a 'battalion' in Hardee’s Drill Manual, used by both sides). In both the North and the South, infantry regiments were organised along similar principles.

A regiment typically comprised ten companies, each of 100 men, supported by staff, drummers and officers. However, the harshness of war quickly saw numbers reduced through battle, disease and desertion so regimental numbers could fluctuate wildly.

Northern states tended to allow regiments to fall below effective levels to a point where a number of such regiments would be forged into a brand new formation. This sometimes had a detrimental effect, with units losing their identity and the esprit de corps that came with it.

The common way to refer to a regiment was a number and the state in which it was raised – for example, the ‘15th Alabama’ or the ‘4th Connecticut’.
