Epic Battles ACW Confederate Brigade

The most basic building block of the infantry was the infantry regiment (referred to as a "battalion" in Hardee's drill manual, which was used by both sides). In both the North and the South, infantry regiments were organized according to similar principles.

A regiment typically consisted of ten companies of 100 men each, supported by staff, drummers, and officers. However, the harshness of war quickly led to a reduction in strength through combat, disease, and desertion, and the number of regiments could fluctuate greatly.

Unlike the North, the general policy of the Confederacy was to send young, inexperienced recruits to reinforce existing regiments to keep them at combat strength. This also gave recruits the advantage of learning from more experienced fighters.
