In the Battle of Midway, the US Navy fielded two aircraft: the SBD-3 Dauntless dive bomber and the TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bomber. At Midway, Dauntless aircraft destroyed all four Japanese aircraft carriers.

The importance of the Douglas SBD Dauntless's performance throughout the war cannot be overstated. Despite relatively poor maneuverability and only adequate performance, it was this aircraft that brought down all four Japanese aircraft carriers in the decisive Battle of Midway. Despite this achievement, the type was retired before the end of the war, even though it had only entered service in 1940.

The TBD Devastator entered service in 1937 and for a short time was the most advanced flying aircraft in the world's navies. However, given the rapid technological development, it was already obsolete by the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At Midway, 41 Devastators scored zero torpedo hits and only six returned to their carriers. Their only success was distracting enemy Zeros for the Dauntless dive bombers. The aircraft was retired shortly after Midway and replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger.
