Colonial Militia Men

The British Army in America was tiny in comparison. Thus, the British military was forced to hire militias in addition to mercenaries. These were mostly units loyal to the British Crown, recruited locally and equipped with modern muskets. The military capabilities of these units varied greatly. Some, thanks to their leaders with military experience, performed not much worse than regular units, while others fled after just a few losses. Thousands of militiamen fought loyally for the Crown, but also on the side of the Americans.
