When the Hellenistic king Pyrrhus of Epirus invaded Sicily in the early third century BCE, he brought with him a number of Indian elephants, echoing the conquests of his cousin, Alexander the Great, in Asia. His Carthaginian opponents were so impressed by the animals’ battlefield prowess that they raised their own corps of elephants. These mighty beasts lived up to their fearsome reputation in the Punic Wars, accompanying Hannibal on his march through the Alps to invade Italy.
