After the failure of Barbarossa to fully defeat the Soviet Union, a new plan was devised, Case Blue. This plan called for a drive through the southern Soviet Union into the Caucasus to secure the oilfields Germany so desperately needed. While initially seeing great successes and far-reaching advances through the autumn, the Axis drives stalled in the face of Soviet resistance and counter-attacks, culminating in the fighting in and around Stalingrad.
