In 1861, the Southern States viewed the election of Abraham Lincoln as president of the fledgling United States of America as a direct threat to their state rights and way of life. America was no longer united, the Union divided as the new Confederate States of America was formed in the South, and the American Civil War began. Lincoln, determined to preserve the Union and put an end to slavery, raised the Army of the Potomac, and across the nation, brothers fought brothers. Over the following four terribly long years, American armies marched across American fields, burning American farms, as Americans killed Americans, in a war the likes of which the nation had never seen.

The Epic Battles system allows players to refight these battles on a grand scale. The game is based on the well-known and award-winning Black Powder rule system, with a few period adjustments to anchor the battles in the ideologies of American Civil War doctrines.
