BP Epic Battles: ACW Infantry Regiment Advancing

In many of history's civil wars, both sides were very similarly equipped, with the colour of uniforms and the flags they fought under providing the distinguishing features. This was no different for the Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, and these miniatures, advancing with their firearms in a "right shoulder shift" pose, are equally suited to being painted as either a Union or a Confederate regiment.

Union soldiers wore dark blue tunics, light blue trousers, and were armed with percussion rifles. They learned to manoeuvre and march great distances to take the war to the South. Early regiments were of variable quality, few having drilled before, let alone seen any significant active service. By the war's end, they were a tough and efficient force, a match for their 'Johnny Reb' adversaries.

Confederate regiments were tough, many in their ranks used to hardship and familiar with firearms. Which was just as well, as compared to their Northern Union opponents, they were frequently ill-equipped, fed, and armed – much of their equipment either scavenged from captured Federal stores or privately acquired. Better-equipped troops favoured the Enfield rifled musket when available, but during the war many types of rifle were used, even old flintlocks in reserve units. Southern troops were renowned for their rapid and fearsome assaults, many letting out the eerie 'rebel yell' to unnerve their 'blue-bellied' opponents.
