BP Epic Battles: ACW Artillery Battery

By the time of the American Civil War, artillery had become a deadly weapon on the battlefield, used in great numbers by both Union and Confederate armies. Some guns were still old-fashioned smoothbore muzzle-loaders, such as those used with great effect in the Napoleonic Wars. However, many others were highly accurate rifled guns, able to hurl shrapnel shells 2,000 yards or more. When push came to shove, guns could employ canister at point blank range to sweep away attacking troops.
