A casual glance at a Victorian era Tommy Atkins revealed little of his fighting prowess. Averaging 5’6” and often shorter, perhaps unable to read or write, appearances were deceptive. However, the average British Redcoat was the most dangerous animal in Africa, equipped with the Martini-Henry breech loading rifle which he could volley fire up to 15 times a minute at a range of 1200 yards if required.

His legendary discipline, marching prowess 'enough to traverse all manner of terrain' and his determination to fight his foes, who were legion, made the British redcoat an implacable enemy.
Well led, well equipped and thoroughly drilled in his capabilities, he paved the way for Empire across the globe. Cheerful and confident the county regiments’ redcoats served their sovereign well, smashing their enemy with concentrated rifle fire, and when needs be selling their lives dearly behind the thrust of their wicked long bayonets.
