At the time of the American Civil War, all things French were in vogue in military circles – especially the dashing uniforms of the Zouaves light colonial infantry! Dressed in extravagant baggy trousers, elaborately embroidered jackets, and a variety of jaunty headwear, over 70 regiments were raised by the Union, whilst a smaller number entered Confederate service. Often beginning as light skirmishing infantry, some were converted to regular troops (often because suitable replacement uniforms could not be had), whilst others remained as Zouaves for the entirety of the war. Zouave regiments often saw themselves as a form of elite shock troops, and many units earned a well-deserved reputation as hard and determined fighters.
