Formed of regiments from Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana, and garbed in stylish and unique black ‘Hardee’ hats, the Iron Brigade earned their moniker at the 1862 Battle of South Mountain, where Major General McLellan reportedly declared to Major General Hooker that the brigade “...must be of iron” and comprised of “the best troops in the world”. Disciplined, tenacious, and brave, the troops of the Iron Brigade suffered the highest percentage of casualties of any brigade throughout the war – a testament to their fighting spirit and determination in the face of danger.
