American Civil War: Infantry Regiment Firing Line

In many of history’s civil wars, both sides were very similarly equipped, with the colour of uniforms and the flags they fought under being the distinguishing features. This was no different for the Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, and these miniatures, presenting arms in the firing line, are equally suitable for painting as either a Union or a Confederate regiment.

Union soldiers wore dark blue tunics, light blue trousers and were armed with percussion rifles. They learned to manoeuvre and march long distances to take the war to the South. Early regiments were of varying quality as few had drilled before, let alone experienced any significant active service. By the end of the war, they were a tough and efficient force, the equal of their opponent “Johnny Reb.”

Confederate regiments were tough, many in their ranks used to hardship and familiar with firearms. Which was just as well, as compared to their northern Union opponents, they were often poorly equipped, supplied and armed – much of their equipment coming from captured Federal states or acquired privately. Better-equipped troops favoured the Enfield rifled musket, when available, but during the war, many types of rifle were used, even old flintlocks in reserve units. Southern troops were known for their fast and fearsome charges, many letting out the uncanny “rebel yell” to unnerve their “blue-bellied” opponents.
