American Civil War: Infantry Regiment Advancing

In many civil wars throughout history, both sides were often similarly equipped, with the colour of uniforms and the flags under which they fought being the distinguishing features. This was no different for the Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, and these miniatures, advancing with their firearms at "right shoulder shift," are equally suitable for painting as a Union or Confederate regiment.

Union soldiers wore dark blue tunics, light blue trousers and were armed with percussion rifles. They learned to manoeuvre and march long distances to carry the war into the South. Early regiments were of mixed quality, as few had drilled before, let alone seen significant active service. By the end of the war, they were a tough and efficient force, a match for their opponent "Johnny Reb."

Confederate regiments were tough, many in their ranks used to hardship and familiar with firearms. This was good, because compared to their Northern Union opponents, they were often poorly equipped, provisioned, and armed - much of their equipment coming from captured Federal states or being privately acquired. The better-equipped troops favoured Enfield muzzle-loading rifles when available, but many rifle types were used during the war, even old flintlocks in reserve units. Southern troops were known for their fast and fearsome attacks, many letting out the eerie "Rebel Yell" to unnerve their "blue-clad" opponents.
