Bolt Action: German Afrika Korps LeFH 18 10.5cm Medium Artillery

Based on an original American idea, recoilless guns vented propellant gas through nozzles (venturis) at the rear of the barrel, rather than damping the recoil via a gun's recoil mechanism. As a gun's recoil mechanism was always heavy, this allowed for a much lighter gun on a smaller carriage, suitable for airborne and mountain use. The disadvantage was that range was reduced and the fierce recoil blast was difficult to conceal from enemy spotters.

First developed by Krupp, then Rheinmetal, the LG40, a 75mm artillery gun, was first used by Fallschirmjäger in Crete in 1941. A 105mm version was introduced in late 1941 and was used in North Africa. They were employed as artillery rather than anti-tank weapons. Both were light enough to be towed behind a Kettenkrad.
