Afrika Korps 8.8cm Flak 37

Originally developed as an anti-aircraft weapon, the 8.8cm Flak 37 (or 'eighty-eight' as it was dubbed by Allied troops) had a high muzzle velocity to reach higher altitudes that modern bombers were capable of at the time. This made the Flak an exceptionally deadly anti-tank weapon. The 88 could also be used as conventional artillery - as one infantryman observed, the 88 was an "anti-everything" gun.

The fearsome reputation of the 88 grew during its service in the Western Desert, where it was one of the few weapons that could deal with the British Matilda II Infantry Tanks.

Many 88s were fitted with a large gun shield.
