In 1944, Elefants served on the Italian front but proved quite ineffective, as their weight prevented them from using most Italian roads and bridges. As at Kursk, most Elefant losses were not a direct result of combat but occurred when mechanical failures and a lack of spare parts forced their crews to destroy and abandon them.
