Kitted out with helmet and cuirass, they were expected to get up close and personal with the enemy, riding them down at a fast pace. The heavy cavalry of the Cuirassiers came equipped in blackened steel armour, resistant to most blades and shot. Cuirassiers were used en masse as shock troops in the Thirty Years War and were a feared opponent.
