The machine had primarily been conceived to counter the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, but its poor engine performance continued to plague pilots in this task. Despite this, the aircraft was an intimidating opponent when Japanese pilots deployed its four-cannon armament and its dive and zoom tactics with great success.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJ2Ms were deployed from Guam and Saipan, and a small number of aircraft were based in the Philippines.
