It replaced the M5 Stuart’s turret with a more spacious, open-topped one, accommodating a short-barreled 75mm M2 (and later M3) howitzer, capable of firing a mix of smoke and high-explosive ammunition. A .50 calibre heavy machine gun provided additional defensive firepower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNamed after American Civil War General Winfield Scott, the M8 saw service during World War II in North Africa, Tunisia, Northwest Europe, Italy, and the Pacific, as well as in the Indochina and Vietnam Wars. Almost exclusively used by the US Army or USMC, a total of 1,778 M8 Scott HMCs were produced. The M8 was increasingly replaced in the self-propelled artillery role by the M7 Priest and the M4 Sherman with 105mm howitzer.
