It was one of the primary tanks of the US Army in the early Cold War and was in service from 1949 until the mid-1950s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe M46 Patton’s only American combat use was during the Korean War. On August 8, 1950, the first M46 Patton tanks belonging to the 6th Tank Battalion landed in South Korea. The M46 proved capable of taking on North Korean T-34 medium tanks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the Ordnance Board classified the M46 as a “medium” tank, its capabilities were akin to the M26 Pershing. The M46 sported a similar (though slightly more powerful) 90mm main gun, so it was not found wanting in firepower. Through the M46’s deployment, Pershings were able to be withdrawn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe M46 proved a crucial component in 1950 in the defence of the Pusan Perimeter. It was then used at Inchon to support the US Marine’s amphibious landings.
