Though North Korean conscription was in force before war broke out, many young men were either encouraged by their own families or pressured into service for a financial reward.\u003cbr\u003eBy the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, the KPA was in every way better prepared for the conflict to come. Not only were they better trained and better equipped but previous guerilla warfare in South Korea had left the ROKA forces with little time to rebuild a strong military presence. As such, the initial attacks on June 25th 1950 were very effective.\u003cbr\u003eThe KPA foot soldier has long been known for being able to withstand the worst the enemy, the harsh Korean climate, and the difficulties his own superiors can throw at him. Modelled on the mechanised Soviet Army, the sports weapons supplied by Stalin and backed by veterans discharged from China, the KPA forces were considerably larger and more dangerous than anticipated by the UN.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKPA LMG Squads\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe basic KPA infantry squad comprised ten men led by a sergeant and junior sergeant. Each squad contained one light machine gun, requiring a second man to act as loader.
