The dream of many French soldiers was to be accepted into the sacred ranks of the Guard. Better pay, rations, uniforms, and a swagger that carried them throughout Europe – it was a post of great honour, and they worshipped their Emperor. They were far from palace guards, however, as long and active service made them superb soldiers, relied upon to get the job done.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis plastic set contains enough troops to field three battalions of Guard (80 soldiers each) with their mounted officers. The Old Guard is distinguishable by the brass plate on the front of their bearskins, and the patch on the rear. The Middle Guard's bearskins bore neither the brass plate nor the rear patch, so these can be painted as fur. We have included a few extra heads; if you wish to further differentiate your units, you can replace some of them with the shako or bonnet to represent the less well-equipped Middle Guard, though this is not strictly necessary!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlso included are units of Guard Marines (30 soldiers) and Guard Engineers (30 soldiers). These add another splash of colour and variety to the French army. To cover the Guard's attack, Napoleon deployed 'his beautiful daughters,' large 12-pounder cannons manned by excellent gunners that had a greater range than most allied guns.
