The BT-7 was built in its thousands and featured in the early battles against the Japanese, and later against the invading Germans. Reaching an impressive 44km\/h on road, and over 30km\/h cross-country, it weighed over thirteen tonnes and used its speed for protection rather than its light, 20mm thick armour. The BT-7 had a crew of three - the driver, loader and commander, who also doubled as the gunner, were kept busy operating a 45mm main gun and a co-axial machine gun. The tank, like many Soviet war machines, was quite crude, and losses were high - over 2,000 were destroyed or abandoned in the first year on the Eastern Front. Yet like most Soviet products these were produced in vast numbers - over 5,000 were made and served with the Red Army for almost the entire war.
