They learned to manoeuvre and march long distances to carry the war into the South. Early regiments were of mixed quality, as few had drilled before, let alone seen significant active service. By the end of the war, they were a tough and efficient force, a match for their opponent \"Johnny Reb.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eConfederate regiments were tough, many in their ranks used to hardship and familiar with firearms. This was good, because compared to their Northern Union opponents, they were often poorly equipped, provisioned, and armed - much of their equipment coming from captured Federal states or being privately acquired. The better-equipped troops favoured Enfield muzzle-loading rifles when available, but many rifle types were used during the war, even old flintlocks in reserve units.
