The coordinated attacks of these two aircraft defined the future of naval aviation and signalled the death knell for the battleship. Aichi dive bombers would, ideally, cripple their target’s anti-aircraft defences to ease the approach of the much slower torpedo bombers. They are most famous for their involvement in the attack on Pearl Harbor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Val was a carrier-borne dive bomber that shared many similarities to the German Ju 87 Stuka and was armed with two fixed forward-firing and two rear-retractable machine guns. It had a crew of two and a light bomb load. As an anti-shipping dive bomber, the Val was a mainstay of the Japanese carrier war effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the B5N performed well compared to its Allied counterparts when it first entered service, by 1941 it was almost obsolete. However, due to the delayed development of its intended successor, the B6N, it was still used throughout the entire war.
