Angmar – The Witch-king's Armies for Middle-earth

Angmar is one of the darkest and most fearsome factions in the Middle-earth strategy battle game. Ruled by the Witch-king of Angmar, this army unites ghostly beings, cruel warriors, and monstrous creatures. On the battlefield, this creates a combination of psychological warfare, raw violence, and strong control mechanics – perfect for players who prefer a menacing, evil army with a rich atmosphere.

The Angmar miniatures include Orcs, Barrow-wights, Shades, Wild Wargs, bands of Orc spearmen, spectral heroes, necromancers, and the Witch-king himself . This mix of physical troops and unnatural beings makes the army versatile, powerful, and visually distinctive. The spectral models are particularly iconic, their menacing forms and flowing silhouettes lending themselves beautifully to painting.

Angmar's gameplay relies on fear, magic, control spells, and morale breakage . Powerful spirit units can weaken opponents, disrupt movement, or block key models. They are supported by solid orc troops and monstrous beasts like the Cave Troll or the Angmar Troll Chieftain, which exert enormous pressure in melee combat. The Witch-king serves as the dominant leader, combining magic, presence, and combat prowess.

For painters, Angmar offers an atmospheric palette: frosty blues and grays, pale greens, weathered metal, brittle fabrics, and ghostly effects. Models like Barrowwights or Shades are particularly well-suited for OSL lighting effects, cold gradients, or fog simulations. Orcs and Trolls, on the other hand, offer classic surfaces for painting leather, muscle textures, bone, and rusted metal.

Thematic army compositions are also popular: pure ghost armies, mixed troops under the Witch-king, or powerful orc forces with mighty monsters. The faction is ideally suited for narrative scenarios such as the battles in the north of Middle-earth, the rise of Angmar, or the battles for the ancient fortresses of the Dúnedain.
